Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced that it is expanding support for longer Facebook Reels, as well as adding new creative tools to the feature. Previously, Facebook Reels were limited to 60 seconds, but now users can create Reels up to 90 seconds long. This move follows a similar expansion for Instagram Reels several months ago, which also increased the maximum length to 90 seconds. The changes come as TikTok has expanded its video length options to include videos up to 10 minutes in length.

In addition to the longer video length, Facebook Reels is also getting a new templates feature that allows users to create Reels using the same structure as trending templates. This feature was previously introduced on Instagram Reels. Facebook Reels is also receiving a "Grooves" feature that aligns and syncs video motion to the beat of a chosen song. This feature was also previously introduced on Instagram Reels.

Facebook launched Reels as a response to the popularity of TikTok. The feature was initially available only on Instagram, but was later added to Facebook as well. According to Meta, Reels is its fastest growing format and continues to grow quickly. The company says that Reels plays across Facebook and Instagram have more than doubled over the last year, and that reshares of Reels have more than doubled on both platforms in the last six months.

Meta plans to continue adding new features to Reels to make it easier for creators to get discovered. While the new Reels features were first introduced on Instagram several months ago, it's possible that Meta wanted to observe their usage on that platform before bringing them to Facebook. With the continued growth of Reels, it seems that Meta's efforts to compete with TikTok are paying off.
