Waymo, Alphabet Inc.'s multi-billion-dollar venture into self-driving cars and trucks, is gearing up for a commercial ride service launch in Los Angeles by removing human safety drivers from its robotaxi test fleet. This move will make Waymo's ride-hailing service "fully autonomous," with the trials set to take place in Santa Monica initially, followed by other neighborhoods. Waymo's chief safety officer, Mauricio Pena, said the company is starting with a dense urban area and will expand and scale up after initial testing.

Although the development of autonomous vehicles has not progressed as quickly as some supporters anticipated five or six years ago, analysts and industry insiders predict a surge in startups this year. However, these startups may face failure due to insufficient funding and extended commercialization processes. Waymo, being one of the most well-funded autonomous technology programs, remains at the forefront of autonomous ride-hailing and is gaining popularity since its announcement.

Waymo is a more advanced new way forward in mobility, providing safe and easy mobility to users. However, the company needs a permit from the State's Department of Motor Vehicles to offer paid rides anywhere in California. Waymo promises to update its self-driving software to avoid talking about traffic continuously
